Jasov

The Church of John the Baptiste and the monastery were mentioned in early Middle-Ages. The Premonstrates came to Hungary in 12th century. But the exact date of their arrival to Jasov is not known. The first known priar we know from the history, was priar Albrecht, who was elected to the head of the order in 1235. In 1436 the monastery was rebuilt as a fortfied one, but in spite of that it was taken by Ján Jiskra and Ján Talafúz. The origin of Košice University is connected with this monastery. It was the second oldest university in the territory of Slovakia, which was founded by bishop Benedikt Kisdy in 1657. In 18th century the old monastery was pulled down and a new representative building in the Late-Barque style was built. It is supposed that the author of the project was Viennese architect Anton Bilgram. The builder was Anton Salzgeber from Tiroland, the decorations were made by Ján LukᚠKracker and Ján Anton Krauss. During the reign of Joseph II the monastery was abolished and was renovated in 1802. The years during 19th century were suitable for the development of the monastery. The library still belongs with its 80000 volumes to the most important historical book funds in Slovakia. The Premonstrates acted in Jasov till 1950, when they had to leave.
